Winter is back for part 2

After a 55 degree couple days here in VT, winter returned. Cars were able to be washed in that short window, but thats about it. Today: 15, windy, snow squalls- where you needed full coverage including googles, neck gators and it's still hard to see. Surface was hardpack with an inch or two on top creating some serious speed but nice slowdown in the flats, where it was a bit deeper. We witnessed a lady from a group of red plastic sledders fly off the trail, nearly hit a tree but stopped with a leg out front (thus spraining her knee). We were not unscathed with a sprained thumb from the rutty trail. All in all a typical dog-tiring, day. We ended it with a stop to the local dive then to a woodstoved house for some more serious veggy nachos and a Magic Hat Variety pak.

Bruce cuttin it around the final turn. We probably hit 34mph or so.

Loaded up the car with equipment and doggy and headed to Stowe. First time out is tough. All the right gear? Stay out not too late the night before? Getting in a cold car in the morning?

10AM Max and I met at the top of the Smugglers notch road for some easy sledding. He came up Jefferson side, me Stowe. Great early season conditions where beginners can feel like pro's.

It feels so great to drive right by the $100 lift-ticket resort Stowe and to a less crowded (by a long shot) wide trail with perfect snow (its always perfect because that is the mindset when you get there). Few people, and you can talk to them. Dogs welcome. Free. Exercisey. I think the best part is you don't feel like you're stuck there on the clock with a ski ticket. Just leave as you please. We did a couple runs thru the hairpin, S curve and chicane. Max let me win the first run, which I appreciate. It was all about picking the right line for racing vs the right track for snow depth. We hit 21 mph which is good considering its almost all turns. Second run he shot video from his helmet cam of me making the corners with dog LuLu playing interference. I'll have that up later. Very fun, more to come this season. By the way, Umiak in Stowe is running Hammerhead tours and training this winter, so give them a shout to get out there. www.umiak.com

Tenney Mountain Top to Bottom Night run!

The first of it kind in the US! Three Chaperoned Night Hammerhead runs for a limited group each Saturday. It was a sight to behold a trail of sled lamps and red blinking lights took to the slopes of Tenney this past Saturday as the first run of the season. It was groomed perfectly and although fast, it was also very controllable. A little spooky at first with limited head lamp illumination and then the very cool entrance into the well lit up terrain park, provided edge-of-the-sled excitement. One customer exclaimed "this is the most fun I've EVER had." We like to provide that. Thanks to the Hammerhead team of Max, Lightning and Brucie for helping out. Rain, snow, the usual mixed bag for April, but we pulled it off with 23 racers staying late, braving it for a chance for stardom and a ride on the Hammerhead Sled. Congrats to all and especially the first-timers who managed to get down the steep downhill format course with only one wipeout. See you next season!

Closing it up on the final day at Whaleback. This is more an oversized Jib park than ski area but was rockin with crazy pond skimmers in some pretty cold wind. Hammerheading was going on too of course. No HH made it across the pond.

Cannon Mountain Demonstration and Race

Incredible! The winner of yesterdays Burke Mountain race Mike Mathers and his wife Jill dove to Cannonista turf 'er "snurf" to take the gold and silver with 6 one hundredth of a second difference. Wow. There was a Max Speed racer there- Craig Duckworth who only managed a middle-of-the-pack run. The winner of the Hammerhead Pro sled at Ascutney a couple weeks ago walked away with 4th spot and a Snot Spot. Cannonista's took 5th and 6th. We had Mike and Jill do a head-to-head sled-off for bragging rights at home and the results are in the last 8 sequence above.

Looks good to have an Open Final there in 2 Saturdays, check back for more info.

The winner of the sled was Jay Johnson whose racing name is "Hurian Waitt" Said his Grandfathers name was Waitt. He is a ski instructor at Cannon and Bretton Woods. Took the sled home in the back of his Mini Cooper. No one believed that it fit. Small but enthusiastic group, everyone really wanted to win the sled.
High sled usage for small crowd that was there. Too windy at times to leave canopy up, it blew over once. Sledders even came out during rain and stayed sledding until 4. Fun was had by all.

Yeah, its up there. 30 mph wind gusting to 45, snow. At least the temperature was high- near 25. Now I was ready to pack this whole event in when I arrived but there were tents up and withstanding the breeze without too much problem. People were pouring into the resort like it was no big deal. I thought Vermonters were tough but this is another level. We probably demo'd the sled to 50 people, none of which complained. Oh the camera did, it was snowy, wet and the batteries died early. Awesome mountain and people, amazing snow cover. Cheap food! Thanks to Gendron Sport and Marie in particular (center)!

Hard'Ack Winter Carnival

Friday night under the lights at Hard’ack was the place to be! It was a slick course. Rope tow access was given to those who rode over and over again. First time rider Marissa said, with a big smile on her face, ‘the Hammerhead is everything I wanted it to be – and more’. Riders were invited to return for the races on Sunday. Before closing up the park for the night a few of us gathered at the bottom to watch MoJo JoJo ride straight down from the top at an unbelievable speed stopping just before reaching the few bystanders. And then the lights went out. Prizes were awarded (Angelo please touch base with us – you placed 2nd and need to get your T-shirt).

250 Hammerhead Wannabe's lined up for a shot at US gold in the two day event. Max Speed himself was running the show along with team Max Speed. This is a very cool run through the woods, not as fast as say the notch, but fun for everyone. Video will be posted soon from a sledder perspective.

WX: Gorgeous, Vis 60+, Sunny, light wind, happy people. It was a small course but people managed to climb up to the tippy top of the fenced area to get maximum speed, upwards of 13 MPH as clocked on the Hot Wheels radar gun. After the lifts closed, a super top secret run was performed from the mid Burke lodge via High Meadow to the Sherburne base as a checkout for management. Results to be disclosed on Facebook, but big teeth were showing.

Cannon Mountain Demo Day and Terrain Park

Snow fell in liquid form Saturday but many braved the weather to try out the Hammerhead on 2 venues. First up was the demo day in front of the lodge from 12-3. It was steep and fast but everyone managed to learn fast and carve the sled like a pro. Then we moved to our regular Saturday evening venue- Asa's way under the lights! HH crew went through 2 jackets and two sets of gloves each with the rain at anywhere from light to heavy with some dense fog and even lightning. An upper air inversion sent down 50 degree air every once in a while, so it was wild. Great evening to get everyone at Cannon acquainted with the HH and how to ride a Handle Tow. Thanks to all the patrol folks at Cannon. Super friendly people embracing this cutting edge sport.

East Corinth is a super Hammerhead venue with a rope tow and T-bar. Slopes are perfect and the HH team is working to gain access on a simple trail with own sled or rental/loaner. Just happened that the VT Tramway man was there as well to "approve" the use on the rope tow/T-bar.

At Tenney I met with the Go Fly Zone manager Zach as well as the Ops guy, ticket person and rental/service mgr. All are tweaked and ready to go. Need a tad more snow and the Handle Tow fixed. But, we have some neat ideas for the HH Luge run. More to come January.

Cannon is starting this weekend with a demo event at noon followed by the weekly Saturday evening HH terrain park (Asa's Way). Nice. This is accessible by handle tow. Hopefully we'll amp this up to the chairlift nearby. Met with Ops, Ski Patrol head and marketing. These are FREE!!!!!

It's starting. We're warming up with layout plans at Cranmore, Black Mountain and Stratton this week. Did some testing this weekend on a closed access road and are building Hammerhead Teams all over the northeast. Look for a Myspace page loaded with community empowerment of sledders all over the US. Moved the race to the Big Hill. Using the Terrain Park, the Rally-X course started at the top, made some nice super-G turns around whisker gates to a wide turn in front of the cheering crowd. Needless to say we bumped up the excitement factor with speed and now the ability to show off at the end. Nice 180's to finish off the run. Unfortunately the handle tow was not working so racers had to walk.

December 30, 2007 PREMIER EVENT

Hammerhead Rally-X Premier Race was a success! Over 20 riders showed up dressed in snowboard contemporary to bomber-jacket hip. Tenney Mountain is a great venue being smaller but varied terrain and beautiful scenery. The first event was held on the tube run with poma lift service to the top. We'll work to make the race even better as the season progresses. Check out the top 4 racers. More photo's to come.
